Susan Horvat is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and a DBT – Linehan Board Certified Clinician™. Susan earned her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology and her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts and Literature from St. Cloud State University. Susan started her career as a high school English teacher and taught for eight years until earning her master’s in Clinical Psychology. In 2014, Susan was hired to build and implement an adherent DBT program for Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center in Red Wing, MN and by January 2016 the program had achieved state-certification status.
In addition to extensive experience with DBT, Susan has received training in Linehan Risk Assessment and Management Protocol (LRAMP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Good Psychiatric Management for Borderline Personality Disorder, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC). Susan was trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) through EMDR Institute, Inc., an EMDRIA-approved program founded by EMDR creator Francine Shapiro, PhD. Susan completed her intensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training with Annie McCall, MA, LMHC and former President and CEO of Behavioral Tech, Dr. Shari Manning.
Experienced in a variety of mental health settings ranging from nonprofit community mental health (Goodhue County Mental Health Center in Red Wing, MN) to private-sector treatment programs (Clearview Treatment Programs in Los Angeles, CA), Susan has effectively worked with clients diagnosed with personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, eating disorders and complex trauma. She specializes in treating adults with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and/or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, dissociation, complex trauma, grief/loss, and issues related to spiritual development. Utilizing a mindful, strengths-based and collaborative approach, her therapeutic style is warm, steadfast, nonjudgmental and optimistic.
Susan is an active member of the California Association for Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (CALPCC). She provides individual therapy as part of Dr. Wallach’s group private practice and facilitates both individual and group therapy sessions within Dr. Wallach’s comprehensive DBT program.
